Rising bollards provide you with a solution for preventing unauthorised vehicles from entering your premises where gates and barriers may not be practical.
This makes them good options where there is no need to control pedestrian footfall but where vehicles may require access at specific times, where the appearance of a property needs to be maintained (such as historic sites) or where significant volumes of traffic may need access for particular events and using barriers may create unnecessary delay in entering and exiting the premises.
Rising bollards are an attractive and unobtrusive option in these situations, disappearing into the ground and lying flush with the road’s surface. They are easy to control and come with safety mechanisms installed to prevent vehicles being damaged or people being harmed.
The bollards are placed into the ground at your property, and set so that they preserve the flat surface of your driveway or road. They can be controlled in a variety of different ways, by remote control, by entering a code into a keypad, by proximity tags – these options will be decided by your requirements. When the bollard is activated, it will rise out of the ground smoothly and almost silently. Different models differ in the speed at which they rise and disappear, but they will usually take only a few seconds.
Audible buzzers can sound as the bollard rises to protect any passers by, and there are additional safety options such as small flashing lights at the top of the post.
Bollards have units installed below the surface of the road, which does need to be considered when looking at installing them for your property, as the work will cause some disruption.
Rising bollards can be controlled by many different types of device – such as remote controls. If your system needs to be accessible by a number of different users then this may not be the best option for you, but for domestic properties this is an excellent way to remotely activate the bollards.
If you don’t want your staff or family to carry fob keys, proximity tags or remote controls with them then you can opt to have a keypad installed which will lower the bollards when a code is entered. The bollards can then be set to rise again once the vehicle has passed safely.
Rising bollards can be installed to trigger using automatic number plate recognition, if you prefer. This is an efficient and impressive style of operation, meaning that the individuals you choose to grant access to don’t need to remember a code or bring a tag with them to gain entry.
In the case of power failure, it is possible to lower the posts using a release key. This can help to put your mind at rest in the event that someone needs to enter or exit your property as a matter of urgency when the power may be down.
As with the ticket terminals, these machines will ensure that anyone wishing to access your site has to pay before the bollards can be lowered and grant them access to your property.
Rising bollards can be battery or mains powered, meaning you don’t have to have power cables extended to the location of the bollards for them to operate. This means that they can be installed at a wide range of premises.
If the bollards are likely to undergo heavy duty use, then a hydraulic mechanism would most likely suit your needs. If the bollards will be used less frequently, or if you prefer to have variable speeds of operation then electric bollards may be better for you as they allow for settings such as the bollards rising slowly and lowering quickly, or visa versa.

If you need to ensure that paid parking is protected, this may be the option for you.
A cheaper option than ANPR, proximity tags can be handed out to authorised personnel to grant them access to your site. These are useful for properties who may have frequent visitors as the tags can be distributed and reused as per your requirements.
