Access Control Systems FAQ's

Here are of some of our most frequently asked questions about access control systems.

An access control system is the name for the technology that allows you to decide who can enter your premises or a particular room/location, and when they can have access to that location. The system can allow you to decide who to give permission to in advance, or when someone requests access.

You can even allow specific individuals to access specific locations at specific times only. Access control systems have been integrated into energy management systems, time-and-attendance systems, and even laundrettes as a way of tracking and billing for the use of facilities. Access systems give you full control over who can access, when they can access and where they can access, and they can store information about it for you too.

If you have any concerns about people being able to gain access to your premises, site or home without your knowledge or permission, then this is certainly something that we would recommend looking into. If you are an employer and need to permit or restrict access for groups of staff to specific areas of the office or premises, this is also something that we would advise looking in to.

If you’re not sure whether this is the solution you are after, give us a ring or complete the contact form and we can talk through your requirements and see if this is the solution for you. it’s also worth considering if you want to allow authorised people to enter a site without the need to keys.

There are many types of access control system, some you may of heard of and some you may not. A common type of system would be automated doors, which allow access in a variety of ways such as fobs or having an individual review the person requiring access before using a button to release the door.

Access control systems can be networked (linked to a computer or server that runs the system, so yo don’t have to physically be on site 24/7) or they can be stand alone systems which do not require a computer.

This is the question that everyone wants an answer to, but unfortunately it is the one question we can’t answer as there are a lot of variables such as type of system, number of access points, size of premises and your own preferences in terms of appearance and networking.

We’re not trying to duck the question, though – we are more than happy to discuss pricing and options with you once you’ve told us what you’re looking for. Please do give us a ring or contact us through this website and we’ll talk through your requirements with you.

Access control can be used on just one door, or it can be added to all entry points on your site. It’s entirely up to you.

Each door will have an electrical magnetic lock fitted to it (known as a maglock). The system will be connected to this magnetic lock. When someone who has authorisation wants to open the door, they will use a fob, a card, a code or press a button which will tell the system to release the maglock and allow the door to open. A system can also be programmed to allow free access through a door for set hours during a day.

All cards and fobs are individually coded which means that cards/fobs can easily be deleted from the system if they are lost. The card/fob will stop working if anyone tries to use it once it’s been deleted. You can also order new fobs and cards whenever needed, and we can programme these onto the system for you – or show you how to do it yourself.

Not at all. We can install something called a biometric reader. These readers allow the system to identify a person without the need for a card or fob. This may be using a fingerprint, iris scanner or a voice recognition device (or a combination of methods). We can also install a hands-free access control system allows the system to register a person as they approach the door.

Absolutely. Access control system can be programmed to trigger CCTV systems, which can then show show you who is at the access point, or start recording, moving cameras to preset views, or call up images on control room monitors. The options are extensive and we’d be more than happy to talk them through with you, if you want something for your sit that is a little more bespoke or integrated with existing systems
